So at Spennymoor a few weeks back. “You have to go to the Sunrise,”
someone said. “The chips are fantastic.” It is not possible to agree.
The Sunrise is just on the Bishop side of the town centre, eastern-orientated as its name suggests but with a wholly anglicised menu on which chop suey rolls and a sweet and sour dip alone offer a sort of Sino qua non.
There are “new lines”, too – corned beef pie, scampi, lasagne and, wholly to play the crab card, fried rice, chips and sauce.
Fish and chips were £4.10. The chips were hot, fresh and firm but a couple of potatoes short of fantastic.
The fish, and its batter, were simply terrific.
As clearly has dawned on Spennymoor, you’d need to be up very early to find a better fish shop than the Sunrise.
